Read
the Bible in a year |
Today's Bible reading is
Joshua 21,22
|
If you have ever thought about reading the entire
Bible then here is your chance to take up the challenge. The Bible
is not a single narrative written by one person, as we understand
books today. Think of the Bible as a library. It is a collection
of prophecies, histories, prayers, parables and teaching written
down over many centuries. The writings that were considered the
most sacred and thoses that were mostly used by the Jews and later
the Christians were brought together in what we now know as the
Bible.

Testing and provision The testing of faith is said to bring the best out of us. Abraham's testing of faith at the sacrifice of Isaac serves us with an illustration. Abraham is called to sacrifice the one and only, and we could easily identify here with the apostle Paul in the fellowship of the suffering (Philippians 3:10). Abraham's sacrifice upon this hill reminds us of the sacrifice that God made upon the hill of Calvary, when God gave his one and only son for us all. What God did not require Abraham to do, he was not willing to do Himself.
Abraham learnt that God was his provider. Miraculously a ram was caught and the sacrifice was made. The awareness that God is Jehovah 'The Lord will provide, Genesis 21:14 is a truth that can be consistently relied upon. Thus it is a reminder to us that just as God provided for Abraham, so God in Jesus provided for our salvation, and the salvation of humanity in Jesus (John 3:16). Abraham's test of faith broadened his faith and confidence in God. A reminder to ourselves that if God tests us He never expects us to do something that He has already not done.
| | Help me trust you
Gracious God we thank You for Abraham's experience here and that this taught him to appreciate and trust You more fully. Lord help us to learn today, especially in those times when we are tested beyond our own expectations, that you do provide for our daily needs. Enable us to grow closer to you through these times and be better equipped to serve your purposes. Amen.

The Lord's
Prayer |
| (traditional form) |
| |
Our Father, |
who art in heaven, |
hallowed be thy
Name; |
thy kingdom come; |
thy will be done; |
on earth as it is in heaven. |
Give us this day our daily bread. |
And forgive us our trespasses, |
as we forgive those who trespass against us. |
And lead us not into temptation; |
but deliver us from evil. |
For thine is the kingdom, |
the power, and the glory, |
for ever and ever, |
Amen |
