Mapping A Way Forward

Introduction

The calling of the Methodist Church is to respond to the gospel of God's love in Christ and to live out its discipleship in worship and mission." (Our Calling as agreed by the Methodist Conference)

Some extracts from the Introductory letter from the Chair of District, Rev'd. Vernon Marsh

Dear sisters and brothers,

The fundamental life of the Methodist Church in our area is in:

  • the discipleship of people who seek to live out the gospel of God's love in their daily lives;
  • the committed fellowship of support, prayer, Bible study, friendship and fun which people engage in within traditional or fresh forms of Church life;
  • worship which honours God and nourishes God's people;
  • the ways in which local Churches (either traditional or new) and projects pursue faithfully ways of being the people of God for their neighbours and explore new ventures in mission;
  • the sharing of much of this with ecumenical partners.

From my perspective, the Mapping a Way Forward recommendations seek to give all of those things fresh room to breathe.

As we engage together in a careful process of consultation, I believe we have to ask ourselves the following kinds of question.

  • Will these recommendations be life-giving for our people?
  • Will they bring people together in creative ways?
  • Will they lift some of the burdens of maintaining present structures?

With all good wishes
