The need for a chaplain

Agrecultural ChaplainAfter the Foot & Mouth epidemic in 2001 and following a report on the plight of Peak District farmers called Hard Times, it was concluded that there was a need for more pastoral support for hill and upland farmers in the area. A post was created at the beginning of 2003 and Graham Hinds became the areas first agricultural chaplain.


The area

Follow this line and it completes a circle: Hartington Buxton Glossop Bamford Hathersage Calver Baslow - Chatsworth Matlock Cromford Newhaven- Alstonefield Hartington. There are approximately 450 farms across the area

The role of the Agricultural Chaplain

A presence at Bakewell Livestock Market, working alongside the Rural Health Team and other support agencies Warm Calling dropping in on farmers Following up referrals where there is a specific need Supporting the local church leaders and their congregations Networking with a variety of individuals and groups including the NHS, Social Services, NFU , Trading Standards etc.

About the Agricultural Chaplain

He is married with 4 children and 7 grandchildren. He has been in farming all of his life, including 24 years as a lecturer in agriculture at Derby College. Is a Man of Kent. Is a church leader at Community Church Derby. Is a Derby County Football Club season ticket holder.
